Tactic Sport<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhilst out there, I had the opportunity to test a couple of Megamo\u2019s key analogue bikes, the Silk and the Pulse, and get a better feel for the brand\u2019s race pedigree and analogue offerings. I was genuinely impressed by the quality and feel of both bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Silk is an excellent bit of kit and a bike I would personally consider buying, but the Megamo Pulse is shiny and new, so I\u2019ll focus on my initial thoughts on Megamo\u2019s latest flagship aero rocketship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Megamo Pulse 07 SLR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n The bike I rode was the Megamo Pulse 07 SLR, an interesting build combining Megamo\u2019s higher grade SLR carbon frame with SRAM Rival AXS, pictured below.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAt \u00a35,099, I suspect many riders would opt for the Pulse 05 CW, which uses the slightly lower grade SL carbon frame, but steps up to Shimano Ultegra Di2 for the same price. This makes for an interesting choice between the higher grade frameset or higher specification groupset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Much to the dismay of Josh, who accompanied me on the trip and comes from an elite downhill background, we set off on our second ride of the day having already covered around 35km on the gravel bikes that morning. We were also a little pressed for time after mountain biker Josh had been promptly sent back to the changing rooms to put on some more Lycra, having made the questionable decision to turn up to a road ride in a T-shirt…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nWorking hard, or hardly working?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
With only an hour and a half before Megamo wanted the bikes back, what followed was a not so steady and perhaps slightly optimistic 49km loop around Girona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Out on the road<\/h2>\n\n\n\n The route was one I\u2019d ridden before, pictured below, and was pretty rolling with a couple of decent climbs thrown in. Once out of Girona itself, we covered around 45km with 425m of elevation at an average speed of 33kph and an average power just shy of 200 watts. Safe to say, the Pulse holds its speed well.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMy immediate impression was of just how stiff and well put together the bike felt, even for a demo bike that had clearly lived a fairly hard life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 173cm, I opted for a size small. The bike felt very stiff when putting the power down, yet remained surprisingly compliant and comfortable. The reach was a little short for me and the front end initially felt slightly twitchy, with some toe overlap on the front wheel when running 170mm cranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is always difficult to get a completely accurate impression of a new bike when the fit is not quite right, particularly when you are coming from your own bike which is dialled in exactly how you want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One thing I would definitely like to see from Megamo is a setback seatpost option. The standard inline, 0mm offset post puts you quite far forward on the bike, which exaggerated that slightly lively feeling at the front end for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both Josh and I also noted the shape of the integrated handlebar. The drops are quite steep and the bar itself feels fairly thin in the hands. It is certainly a distinctive shape, but there was absolutely no questioning its stiffness when the inevitable town sign sprints started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Giving it some licks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n I put in a bit of a dig towards the top of the main climb, a 2.2km section averaging 3.2%. I averaged 280 watts for 4:29 at an average speed of 30kph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a bike equipped with Rival, it felt great on the climb. It was easy to get the power out and the stiffness of the frameset was particularly noticeable when pushing harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We also squeezed things a little on the descent, without getting too silly. Interestingly, I descended the same section 15 seconds quicker than I had in similar conditions on my Scott Foil earlier in the year, so perhaps my initial concerns about the twitchier handling were more down to fit than the bike itself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My verdict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n My verdict after a quick hour and a half bash around road cycling paradise is definitely positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pulse is an excellent offering from a genuinely competitive brand. Pricing sits in similar territory to bikes such as the Giant Propel, but every Pulse benefits from Megamo\u2019s own beautifully engineered integrated cockpit. As well as looking exceptionally clean, the design makes internal cable routing surprisingly straightforward. Equivalent integrated cockpit options can become an additional cost on lower specification Propel models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After spending some time with the team at Megamo, it also became much clearer where the Pulse comes from as a product. Megamo feels like a company full of young, enthusiastic cyclists who genuinely want to make the equipment they themselves would want to race. There is a real enthusiasm for trying something different, improving the product and pushing development forward rather than simply following what everybody else is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pulse reflects that mentality very well. It is fast, stiff, beautifully integrated and competitively priced. There are a couple of fit details I would personally change, particularly the option of a setback seatpost, but that is exactly why getting out and actually riding these bikes matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After 49 fast kilometres over Les Serres, I came away genuinely impressed and very keen to spend some more time on one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
